The Ice Age Horse

The Ice Age Horse deals with the origins and history of this animal. If we look at Ice-Age drawings found in caves in France we will be in no doubt that they exactly resemble the Icelandic horse in its winter coat. After the settlers in Iceland brought their horses with them, the species became isolated and has therefore never been cross-bred with other types of horse. During that time, it evolved unique characteristics. The history of the Icelandic horse is in many respects interwoven with that of the nation itself, through good times and lean.

The Icelandic Horse - DVD

The Icelandic Horse is considered to be of Mongolian origin as the Arabian horse, arriving in Iceland via Russia and Norwey. The breed has been kept completely pure in Iceland for over 1000 years. It is small, but strong, and known for it's good temper and friendliness. It is unique in that it has five gates and is exceptionally smooth to ride. This documentary tells how the Vikings survived with the help of the Icelandic horse and how it was used in agriculture and for transportation in Iceland up to the middle of the 20th century. From that point on horsemanship became very popular in Iceland, and those who have gone on a riding trip in the summer never forget it. Today there are over 70 thousand horses in Iceland, and over 100 thousand are found in 20 other countries around the world. What is the nature of the Icelandic horse? How is it bred? Broken in? Trained? This film has all the answers.

Steed of the Gods

The horse has been part of Icelandic life from the earliest times. Ever since the settlement of Iceland in the 9th century, and well into the 20th century, the horse was so vital to the Icelanders in their daily work, travel and transport that it would have been all but impossible to live in Iceland without the horse. The horse now has a new role to play, as an indispensable companion. For thousands of Icelanders, equestrianism is not only a leisure pursuit, but a lifestyle.

In this book, the Icelandic horse is followed around the country. The relationship of horse and man is explored: the autumn sheep-round-up, and horseback treks. We learn about the freedom of the horse herds in the upland wilderness, and see unique images of a mare as she foals surrounded by green nature, cleans up and suckles her foal, and helps it take its first unsteady steps.

The author of the book, Anna Fjóla Gísladóttir, has enjoyed the company of horses since childhood, and is well known for her fine photographs of this remarkable creature. The photographs in this book are the fruit of decades of work on this demanding yet captivating theme.
